In the past few weeks there was a real flood of rumors about Apple iPhone 7 and what kind of features will it have. And this speculation fest comes less then a month after the release of the iPhone 6. RumorBlender waited for some time to accumulate more rumors in the Web and to put as many of them into the blender. Because they started to pile up we are preparing a series of articles focused on different aspects of the possible next Apple’s smartphone.

One of the most intriguing rumors is that Apple is preparing to push really hard with the iPhone 7 into the camera segment. For years the tech giant tries to give an all rounded solutions for its smartphones. This is valid for the cameras. The iPhones have good sensors when you compare to the other big manufacturers like Samsung, HTC and LG. But the best cameras in the smartphone world are coming from Nokia with their monstrous 41-megapixels PureView and Sony which relies on a devices with the 21MP sensor.

DSLR in an iPhone 7

Now according to the latest rumors Apple want to change that. Instead of making a slight upgrade of the camera like adding a lense or tweaking the software, the company from Cupertino planned to install a totally different sensor into the next iPhone 7. The new camera could achieve DSLR capabilites, which will make it even with Nokia and Sony’s cameras. The information comes from the podcast “The talk show”, the co-host John Gruber mentions that ” I heard is that next years camera might be the biggest camera jump ever. I don’t even know what sense this makes, but I’ve heard that it’s some kind of weird two-lens system where the back camera uses two lenses and it somehow takes it up into DSLR quality imagery”.

There are two hurdles for the Apple’s engineers to achieve this. The first one is that Apple has a golden rule – iPhones must be thin. And in the last iPhone 6 the camera bezel was stick out of the aluminum back because it was too thick to fit seamlessly in the thin metal casing. Putting a twice as big sensor will be difficult especially if you want to retain the thickness of the phone. Just see the Lumia 1020 and how big is the 41MP sensor.

Ironically but Sony may have the answer for that. The Japanese company announced a small 21MP sensor that can fit into a tinny space. Sony for years is the main Apple’s supplier for the smartphones camera. So we may see this component into the next iPhone 7.

Interchangeable lenses

But the most interesting part is that Sony filled a patent for a camera with a ability to change the lenses. This will make the smartphone and possibly the iPhone 7 more closer to a real DSLR. The absence of a interchangeable lenses is the main thing that separates Lumia 1020 from a modern DSLR.

The second problem for Apple will be will Sony be agree to supply this technology for the iPhone 7? We can only guess the contract agreements between the two companies. Also Sony for now shows off only a patent and no functioning device with the new camera.

This rumor is making pretty much sense for Apple to put a really good camera into the iPhone 7. People loves to take pictures. The iPhone is well known for its outstanding auto settings, but for a more demanding customers they will prefer DSLR, Sony Xperia Z3 or Lumia 1020. And this could even the odds in terms of camera quality.

Plausibility? It is early but it sounds very logical: 60%
