Apple may introduce three models of smartphones this year, as it may launch smaller iPhone 6C version this autumn. The news comes from the Taiwanese blog DigiTimes and resurrects an old rumor about the company’s portfolio.
The report suggests Apple will release an upgrade to the existing model iPhone 6 and 6 Plus which will become iPhone 6S and 6S Plus. But the tech giant will add a third model – iPhone 6C, which will have smaller 4 inch screen.
With this third version Apple will hope to get all iPhone users. There are some concerns that some owners of the previous models like iPhone 4S and 5S are not willing to switch to the new ones because they didn’t like the big screens. With a smaller iPhone 6C the company will have a broader portfolio.
According to DigiTimes the new smartphones will have displays from Japan Displays, Sharp and LG Displays. Also the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus will be equipped with the improved A9 chip. The smaller iPhone 6C will have the current A8 processor. All the devices will have NFC capabilities and fingerprint sensor.
Sources of the Taiwanese blog also suggested that the smaller iPhone 6C most probably will be manufactured by Wistron, and the 6S and 6S Plus will be made by Foxconn and Pegatron.
This rumor comes from relatively reliable source like DigiTimes, but still there are some concerns for Apple launching a smaller iPhone 6C.
The main one is the poor sales and inevitably slashing the previous budget iPhone 5C version. Back than Apple tried to get the more mid-price segment. But with the latest models it returns to the premium and to phablet ones.
The idea of further extension of the portfolio will be against Steve Jobs philosophy for more focused and streamline product line. Also the failed iPhone 5C experiment will rise the doubts further.
But Apple starts to change. With its Apple Watch it will launch in the coming month a ton of different versions of the new wearable. Two size factors, with three different casings with various combinations with different bands.
So this increases the chance to see a smaller iPhone 6C, but still there are some doubts about it.
Plausibility for a smaller iPhone 6C – 60%
