Google launched Android One phones in India

Google launched three cheap smartphones in India powered by the new Android One version of its popular mobile platform. With this move the Internet giant ended not one or two rumors. In the recent months there were couple of speculations about the Google’s event in India. Most of them were related to the Android One smartphone launch, but in Monday the company give additional information about other rumors. But let us start with the cheap handsets.

The rumors were that Google will show three Android One smartphones which will be on sale almost immediately. The handsets will be manufactured by the Micromax, Karbonn, and Spice. The Internet company confirm all that in Monday’s event. It shows us three separate devices from Micromax, Karbonn and Spice. All of them are hitting the Indian market right now.

In terms of  specs, the new devices will have cheaper hardware.  Karbonn, for example, is launching the Sparkle V Red, which comes with dual SIM cards, a 4.5-inch display (480 x 854 resolution), a 5-megapixel back camera and 1GB of RAM. It is power by MediTek processor. The most interesting thing is that it will have the latest version of Android  – 4.4 KitKat. Also Google said that those devices will be the first one that will get the next version of the mobile OS – Android L (plausible named Lion).

OK, so we have Android One device with KitKat version of the operating system. What is Android One? It is special set of rules made by Google for the manufacturers which actually gives the Internet giant tight control of the platform. It is necessary if you want to have low cost hardware and good user experience in the same time. But it closed almost fully the “open” platform. This sacrifice will show us will Androidl be successful if Google close it like Apple does with iOS or Microsoft with Windows Phone. Which is very intrigue question.

From Google’s event one rumor was busted. latest speculations pointed out that the Android One devices will be priced range from 116 to 165 dollars in India. At least in the first months. But the company give them price tag of 6,399 Indian rupees which is about 105 dollars. For example: Micromax Canvas A1 (pictured above) is priced at 6,499 rupees which is about 106 dollars. It is still above the 100 dollars price tag, but bellow the previous projections.

There ares big ambitions for the new Android One smartphones. The Taiwanese chipmaker MediTek expects to deliver from 1.5 to 2 millions devices in India to the end of the year. Those are very high numbers, but it is not impossible. The Indian market is starting to explode and it had 186% sales growth only for the last year. Almost 78% of that sales are in the price range below 200 dollars. Google joins a fierce battle for the budget segment and could take a big market share in the coming months.
